Lake Powell reached it’s high point for the water year 2008 on July 16 at 3633.72 feet above sea level. Lake Powell is considered full at 3700 feet above sea level leaving it 66.28 feet low.
For the first time in five years the Cut at Castle Rock is open. This was the first above average water year in eight years, tho we had one average year in this drought.A five year period of extreme drought occurred n water years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 with unregulated inflow to Lake Powell only 62, 59, 25, 51, and 49 percent of average, respectively.
Drought conditions eased in water year 2005 in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Precipitation was above average in 2005 and unregulated inflow to Lake Powell was 105 percent.
However, 2006 was drier again with 71 percent of average inflow. Water year 2007 was another year of below average inflow with unregulated inflow into Lake Powell at 68 percent of average.
The inflow of so much water in to Lake Powell this year hopefully signals the end of the drought cycle that has been ongoing since 1999.
