A couple of weeks ago I moved my son, Joseph, to Cedar City, Utah, to attend college at Southern Utah University. As we were making the drive back to Lake Powell we decided to go the “long way” toward St. George then over through Leverkin – Hurricane and Kanab. Even 2 weeks ago the Mill Flats (Dixie National Forest) fire, which has been burning almost a month, was very noticeable from 1-15 in the New Harmony area.

As of tonight there are 400 fire fighters trying to set the perimeter, 550 homes are threatened and about 60 commercial buildings. So far the fire is but 5% contained and is currently at 8000 acres. 3 homes and several out buildings have been burned.

My daughter took this photos from the moving car on 1-15 near New Harmony on August 18th. Joseph called from Cedar City today to say that it has been “raining” ash there for the past 24 hours. The smoke here at Lake Powell has been so thick at times today the main buttes are hardly visible.
