On April 3rd at the Big Water, Utah, town hall several key members of the Lake Powell Pipeline project presented information to local community members. There were residents from New Paria to Big Water as well as a reporter from the Lake Powell Chronicle in Page, Arizona present. The main point: Utah is allocated 1.4 million acre feet of water (1 acre foot= 325851 gallons) a year is currently using about 1 MAF. The pipeline would utilize another 100,000 acre feet of water in Utah’s allocation.
Some of the highlights
- The background studies have been in the works for 17 years, since 1991
- Over 200 different alternatives have been looked at
- The pipeline completion date is set to be 2020
- Kane county is better prepared than other areas for growth as far as water is concerned
- Kane County currently has @ 6000 residents which is projected to grow to 14,000 by 2050
- Most growth in Kane County is now and is projected to be internal growth
- There are seven proposed hydro plants on the pipleline system
Time schedule for the pipeline:
- 2008-2012 Environmental Impact Studies and other regulatory studies – Licenses, Permits and Records of Decisions – National Environmental Policy Act Guidelines
- 2013-2015 Final Design
- 2016-2020 Construction
- 2020 Water Deliver and Power Generation
Next up – Scoping Meetings. Scoping meetings are where the public makes comments to help determine the scope of what is going to be covered in the Environmental Impact Studies.
