A few months ago I wrote  a piece explaining the Northern Arizona Council Of Governments (NACOG) first time homebuyer assistance program.

Last week at a Page City Council study session, Ken Sweet, the director of NACOG gave a brief history of the organization, their goals and programs.

NACOG is a large, yet very unpublicized, organization that works mostly behind the screens funding programs such as Head Start, a sewer line in industrial park, many Page Senior Citizens Services and the First Time Homebuyers assistance program.

NACOG was started in 1964 as a way for regional governments to address regional needs and issues. Representatives from 4 counties and 8 tribal governments participate in NACOG. Bill Justice, the mayor of Page, is our local representative to NACOG.

With a annual operating budget of $30 million dollars their goal is to provide services to the most needy of the region with direct service. Sweet estimates the economic impact of NACOG on the region to be about $187 million.

That impact can be seen through the first time homebuyers program as well which provides housing to qualified buyers. These folks can then permanently stay in the Page Lake Powell area contributing to our community because of their sustainable home ownership, helped in part, by NACOG.

Next years NACOG annual meeting is scheduled to be held in Page.
