News hit this weekend that the National Park Service has hired Brown Brothers Construction from Loa, Utah, to deepen the Castle Rock Cut at Lake Powell.
The Cut is a popular boating shortcut that saves about 12 miles for boaters as they trek up Lake Powell from Wahweap Marina. Without The Cut open boats must travel down Wahweap Bay toward Glen Canyon Dam, then get in the main channel to head up lake.
Last summer was the first time in five years The Cut had been open to allow boats through due to the prolonged drought Lake Powell has faced. The Cut was closed again in November due to low water levels. The photo above was taken in summer 2008 the first day it was open to boat traffic.
The plan is to remove 15,000 cubic yards of sandstone from The Castle Rock Cut allowing the water to flow through and boats to pass. The National Park Service says if Lake Powell levels drop again, they will deepen it further.
