Another Lake Powell Fridays activity:
The John Wesley Powell Museum in Page, Arizona, has a wonderful new exhibit opening on April 25th, 2009 called Beyond the Rainbow.
As a history buff of the Lake Powell area, southern Utah and northern Arizona, this collection is a real treat.
According to the release by The Powell Museum:
Beyond the Rainbow highlights a sampling of an important collection of photos, letters, diaries and memorabilia kept by James J. Hands from 1927- 1928 expeditions to Rainbow Bridge, as well as repeat photography by his son, Tom C. Hanks.
Led by well known anthropologist Clyde Kluckhohn, the expeditions were archaeological, anthropological and ethnographic trips dedicated to researching cultures of northern Arizona and southern Utah. James Hanks took hundreds of photographs chronicling their journeys, which will be on display through February 2010.
Join Tom C. Hanks at the Powell Museum on Saturday April 25th, 2009 at 4:00 p,m. for refreshments and an exhibit tour.

From 1927 to 1929, Clyde Kluckhohn led three expeditions to the area around Kaiparowits Plateau (also known as Wild Horse Mesa) on the Navajo Nation. It is claimed that prior to these trips no Anglo person had ever ventured this deep into the reservation. Kluckhohn later wrote Beyond the Rainbow, which describes these expeditions. James J. Hanks was a member of the expeditions, acting as the primary photographer for the expeditions.
