Wildfire Season Is Here. Check out one of my favorite websites
National Interagency Fire Center
This time of year in the west is famous for wildfires and while the Lake Powell area is not frequently visited by fire, other tourist areas around are. The recent exception was the 2006 Navajo Mountain fire which burned for almost a month and had 450 fire fighters working it, some from as far away as New York.
This is a great site to check before planning your Grand Circle trip. The agency is based in Idaho and covers most of the west. It has up to date information on all working fires by state.
This week trails in Zion National Park were closed and hikers had to be evacuated because of the Cliff Fire. 28 fires were caused by lightening in a fast moving storm yesterday, with Cliff Fire being the largest.
Here is an update from the website today “Nine new large fires were reported: one each in Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Oregon, Texas, and Washington; and two in Utah. Firefighters contained three large fires: one each in California, Florida, and Washington.”
Move down the page and you can see all active fires by state.
