Lake Powell visitation saw a huge increase in August this year. Of course, for those of us who live here, there was no need of the AZ Daily Sun article explaining the increase as we have noticed it in the the grocery stores, restaurants, highway road traffic and lines at the NPS fee booths. All good news for the economy of an area based heavily on tourism.
Early visitor counts were down for the year but August saw a huge rally, 31% over August of 08 bringing the numbers for the month to just under 409,000 through the Glen Canyon National Recreation area (GCNRA). While the greater number of those visitors come to see Lake Powell, the lake is roughly only 13% of the GCNRA. There are any number of outdoor experiences visitors can have not only at Lake Powell but throughout the recreation area.
The increase brought Glen Canyon NRA visitation up just under 5% from 2008 year to date.
Page, AZ, has no municipal property tax and derives their revenue from sales tax and city property sales, so the visitation increase is great for them as well.
